Photoshop Layers of digital art project

This is is a slide show showing several Photoshop layers used to create an image with a "silk screen" feel. I started with a photograph taken in a Greek Island village this summer. That photo was imported as a background. I assembled the slide show by taking a "screen shot" (shift, cmd,4) after every 3 or 4 layers. You can see I completely covered the background photo. I tried to keep a simple, clean feel to the alleyway. I covered over distracting elements. To keep it simple and feeling like a private alley I only left one chair in the final version. I changed the style of the table to give it a more "timeless" feel. I also put a small flower pot on the table to cheer up whoever might sit at that table. In retrospect I think I could have added a few more highlights (of light) to give the final version some more drama.

Alleyway in upland village, Milos Island, Greece

You can compare the photograph to the final Photoshop image. You can see what I left in and what I took out.

This photograph was the basis (background layer) for this digital image (done using Photoshop).

Rolle on Lac Leman

This image was done in Photoshop. I took the original photo in Rolle, a small town on the lake of Geneva, in Switzerland. The photograph you see here was imported and used as the background layer. Multiple layers were selected (lasso tool) and colored primarily using the "fill bucket" tool. While I wandered off on my own selecting colors I stayed fairly true to the original shapes and composition of the photo. If I were to revisit this image I would likely liven up the colors a little and try to do more with the light and shadows and do a more with the lake reflections.

This photo was taken at sunset looking towards Lone Mountain on Admiralty Island. I liked the sky. I imported the photo into Photoshop and used it as the background for the digital image. I was happy with my tree and landform selections - but the sky just did not want to be captured no matter how many layers I through at it.

This drawing was the basis for the digital image. The digital image was done in Photoshop.

Sept. 13 2008

My first class of Technology and Fine Art incorporated a needed review of Photoshop.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much more sense it all made this time around.  The "Macfear" factor has dropped to a very manageable level.  Just knowing how to power up the laptop, navigate the dock - or even what the dock is - has made a huge difference.  I'm looking forward to the class projects.  I have a better sense of what style interests me and a vague sense of how to accomplish it.  At this point I'm somewhat comfortable with selection process in Photoshop and hope that there is some transference to Painter (which I am less comfortable with).  This class I worked a little in an image from an alley in a small Greek Island village.
